I am a Viking's fan. Yes, i am still having a hard time accepting that the Vike's lost yet another NFC Championship game by a field goal in Overtime...in a game we should have won. Man, that is now the second time in which that entire sentence rings true. The part I am struggling with the most is that ONCE AGAIN, the Viking's were the better team. In this case, the Viking's were a MUCH better team than the Saints. We ran up and down the field, putting up crazy numbers on a Saint's team that everyone thought was unstoppable for the majority of the season. That is, until the Vike's fumbled away the season, just one game prior to meeting up with Peyton Manning in Miami. Ouch. This one is going to sting. And unlike the Bears in 2007, this Viking's team wouldn't have gotten spanked by the Colts.
We had the dream scenario this year. We had all the "piece's in place" and were just a QB short of greatness. It seemed like a Super Bowl win was destined to happen. We got Favre, we got on a roll, We destroyed the Pack twice, the Bears completely wet the bed and were never a factor, the Vikes had a 2.5 game meltdown, then came back strong, the Pack had an early exit, and then the Vikes DESTROYED a Cowboy team that everyone said was the best team in the NFL and that we didn't have a chance against. It was all coming together to be the dream year. But no.
Despite all the fumbles, costly penalties, and several missed interceptions, the play that will still haunt me is the Favre interception. So many questions go through my head...Why didn't we kick the field goal, why did we opt to throw instead of run, and how in the world could we have 12 MEN IN THE HUDDLE on the most important play of the season!! (turns out this venting session isn't very therapeutic). I guess in retrospect it seems fitting for the season to end that way. We borrowed the enemy's prized weapon and it blew up in our face at the bitter end, just as it did with the Pack in 2006.
Is Brett Favre's legacy going to go down as the most gifted QB to ever lose in his final two trips to the NFC Championship by throwing a costly interception at the end of regulation? Possibly. However, he should undoubtedly go down as the toughest SOB to ever play the game. That is without question. This brings me back to the final question of "Why didn't he run to get the Vikes back into field goal range rather than throw the ball DIRECTLY to the Saints D?" The answer: He was banged up. Hurt more than we had ever realized. Here are 2 crazy pics taken the day after the NFC Championship game. Not only are they painful to look at, but they also shed some light into why he wasn't able to run for the extra yardage. Crazy to think that he could take that kind of beating at the age of 40 and still play the entire game.
